What is it:
Test your child’s ability to listen to instructions before performing the appropriate action
Teaching Objectives:
To discriminate between items
To differentiate across various types of instructions
To sustain attention required to listen and act upon the instruction
How to use:
Assess your child’s knowledge of the different objects listed before giving instructions.
Give various types of instructions to the child. (E.g.,“Colour/Cross/Circle/Tick/Underline the object as stated by you)
Teaching Tips:
Ensure that the environment is free of potential distractors (sounds, toys, etc.) to optimise your child’s listening
Use hand over hand prompt to perform the action as instructed if child is unsure of what to do (E.g. Strokes needed to cross/tick/underline/circle an object)
If the child is having difficulties, start off with 1 or 2 instructions and ensure mastery before adding more instructions
Embed more learning opportunities:
Receptive language - Point to the firefighter
Expressive Language - What is this?
Read to your child and ask questions along the way to assess your child’s state of attention and listening
