Updated: Jul 18, 2020

What is it

Activity sheets to practice patterning (AB and ABB pattern) by

  1. Type of vehicles

  2. Size

  3. Colour

Teaching Objectives

  • Learn about relationships and patterns

  • Develop numeracy concepts

How to use

  • Cut out the vehicles

  • Introduce the activity to your child by saying “We will be practising patterning by (type/colour/size)”.

  • Get your child to point and verbalise the pattern

- Type: car, bus, car, bus…

- Colour: red, blue, red, blue...

- Size: big, small, big, small....

  • Place the 2 options in front of him and ask “What comes next?” or “What goes in here?” while pointing to the box.

  • Allow him to pick his answer and place it in the box. Verbalise the pattern together again.

  • It is okay if your child picks the wrong one. Read out the pattern to him and highlight the error. Children can learn from mistakes too!

Teaching tips

  • Make it more fun by using actual vehicle toys to make patterns!

  • Continue to point out different patterns everywhere to help your child understand why he needs to learn patterning

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Practise fine motor skills by cutting and pasting vehicles

  • Receptive language: “Find the (colour)(vehicle)”, " Find the (size)(vehicle)".

  • Expressive language: “What is this?” , “What colour is this?”
