Labels and Action Words at the Playground

What is it

A set of worksheets with different instructions to teach children to identify playground vocabulary including labels and verbs

Teaching Objectives

  • Expand everyday vocabulary about the playground

  • Sustained attention for longer worksheet tasks (e.g. picture-word-picture matching, fill in the blanks)

  • Apply and use action words (e.g. climbing, running, sliding) to describe their actions or the actions of others

  • Encourage children to name common playground equipment and action words when they see it in real life

How to use

  • Read out the labels and action words with your child to familarise him/her with the terms at the playground

  • Use the worksheet prompt to teach your child what needs to be done (e.g. drawing lines for matching)

  • Prompt your child to expressively name the playground equipment and action words “monkey bar”, “hopping”

Teaching tips

  • Go outdoors (e.g. to playgrounds or parks) and encourage your child to point out the playground equipment and describe what they see and do

  • Act out the various action words (e.g. running, jumping, hopping, skipping) with your child to make learning more fun

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language - “point to the swing”

  • Expressive language – point to a label picture and ask “What is this?”

  • Expressive language – point to an action word and ask “What’s happening”
