How to use

Learn to read series

  • Build a good habit by having your child point to each word as he/she reads- This helps with attending!

  • Verbally prompt your child to read the target sight words on the first 3 to 4 pages. On the following page, pause and allow your child some time to read the target word on his own.

  • If he is able to read the target words, praise, praise, praise! Allow him to read the rest of the book independently.

  • If he still struggles, it’s ok! Continue prompting a few more times, then pause to allow him to try reading the words on his own again.

Teaching tips

  • Read to your child daily to help him develop a love for reading! Not only are you teaching him how to sound out words, you are also growing their vocabulary and building essential comprehension skills.

  • Practice makes perfect! It is ok to have your child read the same book over and over again. Repetition helps with learning!

  • Get your child to point to different sight words to see if he/she can identify the words receptively (e.g. point to ‘like’; point to ‘see’)

  • Practice reading the same sight words in different books, texts, worksheets, etc.

  • Use our other ‘Learn to read series’ sight word books in different themes e.g. animals, transport and body parts! Click here to explore: https://www.ourspecialstory.com.sg/blog/categories/reading
