Let's Match!

The ability to match is a fundamental skill to many concepts. It is also essential to language development when a child is learning to read or write. In this printable, your child will learn to attend to the details of each farm animal by comparing their different features.







What is it

  1. Identical and non-identical pictures of farm animals

  2. Matching worksheets

  3. Animal cut outs to paste in farm scene 


Teaching Objectives

  • Develop matching skills which is a prerequisite to learning other skills

  • Increase attention to detail


How to use

  • Print 2 copies of the same set of animal picture cards to introduce identical matching

  • Lay 3 different animal cards out in front of your child 

  • Pass 1 matching animal card to your child and give instruction “Find same” or “Where’s this animal?”

  • Once he is consistent with matching cards, try matching his favourite animal figurines to the cards


Teaching tips

  • Make sure your child is paying attention and looking before giving him the card to match

  • Be encouraging! Help your child out as much as possible if he is struggling

  • Put the cards on paper plates as a clearer indication as to where he should place the matching card

  • Make it fun by turning it into a game of treasure hunt or hide and seek!

  • Praise your child for good effort i.e. “I like you looking at the cards!”


Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language: Point to the (animal), Where is your pencil, Get the ruler

  • Expressive language: What animal is this? 

  • Fine motor skills: Cutting along the lines, holding a ruler

  • General knowledge: Which animal lives in a sty? Which animal lives in a stable?

  • School Readiness: How many ducks are there?
