Colouring Shapes with Border Prompts

Updated: Aug 18, 2021

What is it

Colouring worksheets of shapes

  • Level 1: Thick borders

  • Level 2: Thin borders

  • Level 3: No borders

Teaching Objectives

  • Learning to identify the shapes

  • Learn to colour within the borders

How to use

  • Start with Level 1, then slowly progress to level 2 then 3.

  • Thick borders are provided to allow room for error, as child may not understand to colour within the border or does not have enough control to do so

  • Emphasize colouring ‘inside’ the lines (i.e. good colouring inside the lines!)

  • Ensure that your child is looking when he/she is colouring. If he/she is not, stop him from colouring and allow to resume when he looks. Praise for good looking!

  • If your child colours outside the lines, provide feedback (i.e. that’s not inside) and prompt him/her to colour inside.

  • Prompt the child hand over hand and slowly reduce your holding pressure if he starts to understand to colour within the lines.

Teaching tips

  • Colouring is a great activity to practice other objectives, such as

    1) holding the writing tool in the tripod position (provide thicker colouring tool)

    2) sustained attention (praise for good looking)

    3) producing enough downward pressure to prepare for writing skill (get your child to stamp or colour harder)

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Choose the correct colour pencil to colour the shape

    • Easy

      • What colour is the shape? (yellow)

      • Can you get (yellow)?

    • Advanced

      • Can you find the same colour? (pointing to the shape)
