How to use
1. Blending phonics sounds
Practise reading the target word families in isolation on page 5-6.
2. Shared reading
Read the story together and have your child repeat after you
Pause and let your child join in on the highlighted family word or common sight words that they have learned.
Point to a word and ask e.g. “what word is this?”Focus on one word at a time
3. Point and Find the Words
Read the words out loud, and have your child listen and point to the correct word\
Focus on one word at a time.
Teaching tips
Keep the reading activity short to maintain attention and motivation.
Celebrate small successes and praise your child for effort e.g. “nice looking!” “good reading!”, “well done!” , “keep it up!”
Reduce frustration by setting a timer to provide a visual reminder of the reading duration.
Apply single words e.g. “cat”, “man” with pictures or daily life to increase association and provide more meaning e.g. point to a male family member “he is a man!”.
If your child struggles, go back to word-level (page 5-6) to practise reading in isolation before reading in books.
Use finger pointing to support tracking while reading.
Prompt your child more in longer sentences with more target words (“Let’s point to ‘rat’, ‘cat’ ”, parents can point and show the child the correct word).
