What is it

A set of worksheets made to teach children how to count up to 10 using a visual tool, that is the number line. Number line allows children to visualize numbers and help them with simple addition. There is also a template of the number line that can be printed out and use for future practices. With the given prompts and ample practices at the start, children will be able to add using the number line independently at the end of the worksheet.

Teaching Objectives

  • Learning what a number line is and how to fill in the numbers.

  • Learning how to draw the jumping arrows on the number line to find the answer.

  • Adding numbers (up to 10) using the number line.

How to use

  1. Learn about the number line

    • Teach your child to recognise the number line template, guide them to fill in the missing numbers along the number line and get them to familiarise themselves with the concept.

      • Offer verbal prompts by counting aloud together.

      • Encourage your child to rote count from 1 to 10 to help them to fill in the correct numbers.

    • At the same time, emphasize to your child that addition means putting things together/become more, and to do addition, one needs to find the total.

  1. Addition with Number Line

    • Read aloud the equation with your child

    • Mark/Underline the bigger number on the number line.

    • Draw the jumping (forward) arrows based on the value of the smaller number.

    • Circle the final number (‘total’) on the number line and write down the answer.

    • This worksheet offers step-by-step guidance, and each step is broken into smaller steps to help your child learn and acquire the skills.

      • Prompts, like tracing, colour coding, underlines and circles, are faded systematically. The small notes on the top right of the pages indicate the learning target/steps that are currently working on.

  1. Number Line Template

    • Cut and laminate the number line templates for future use and expose your child to more equations.

Here are some videos that can help with teaching the concept:

  1. Addition (More than 10)

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language – “Point to the red circle”, “Draw 3 arrows”, “Trace the number 9”, “Which is the bigger number?”

  • Expressive language – “Let’s count together”, “How many arrows are there?”, “What is the total?”
