Teaching Objectives

  • Work on reading, tracing and writing skills to understand sentence structures.

  • Work on sustained attention and independence to complete worksheets.

  • Learn the capitalisation rules in various sentence types, with different punctuations.

  • Learn and apply worksheet skills by recognising different instructions. E.g., circle, underline, unscramble, cut and paste.

  • Work on building complete sentences with a subject, a verb and an object.

How to use

  • Checklist for sentences: Capital, Subject, Verb, Punctuation (and Object).

  • Identify when to use a capital letter according to the different rules.

  • Identify the different components in a sentence – the subject, verb and object – using guiding questions provided.

  • Rearrange simple words to build your own sentence with the following structure: a capital letter, a subject, a verb, an object, and a full stop.

  • Write a sentence based on the pictures provided.

Teaching tips

  • Go to the library and borrow some simple storybooks. Identify the different parts of a sentence – the subject, verb, object, capital letters and punctuation marks.

  • Watch videos on sentence building to expose the child to more sentence types.

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language – “point to the cat, cat is the subject”, “jump is a verb, let’s jump!”

  • Expressive language – point to the sun, and ask the child, “What is this?”, point to the girl jumping, and ask the child, “What’s happening?”

  • Spelling – cover the words and get the child to recall and spell the word independently

  • Using the same picture, come up with different ways to describe and build a sentence.
