What is it

A set of worksheets made to teach children how to count faster in multiples of 2,5,10 to improve numeracy skills, mental math and and prepare for complex mathematical concepts like multiplication and division.

Teaching Objectives

  • Sustained attention and effort to remember multiples of 2,5,10

  • Identify and predict patterns in number sequence

  • Improve mental math and count faster

  • Practice counting in multiples or groups

  • Exposure to different worksheet skills and instructions

How to use

1) Dot-to-dot

  • Read the numbers aloud together with your child and guide them to connect the dots in sequence. This helps them to understand skip-counting numbers follow a predictable pattern

  • Guide your child to trace the numbers and read out the numbers at the same time

2) Circle, Colour, Cross out

  • Read the worksheet instructions together with them and guide them to follow the provided prompts for circling, coloring and crossing out.

  • Introduce the pattern to your child “+2, +5, +10” by guiding your child’s fingers to trace along the arrows

3) Count and Write

  • Guide your child to count the number of items in the first group and write the correct number in the boxes provided

  • By the third or fourth box, expose your child to the pattern “+2, +5, +10” and practise skip-counting with your child to count quickly without counting in ones

    • “plus five, ten fingers, plus five, fifteen fingers, plus five, twenty fingers…”

4) Fill in the missing number

  • Practise recalling and writing the skip-counting numbers in multiples of 2, 5, 10, without any visual prompts!

    • Provide verbal prompt by reciting the skip-counting numbers if needed (e.g. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50..)

    • Use the previous worksheets as a visual prompt if needed.

Teaching tips

  • After your child is done with each worksheet, point to the numbers and recite the skip-counting numbers together with them (e.g. 2,4,6,8,10). Test their memory by covering some numbers!

  • Make learning more fun by pairing them with songs, and use the song as verbal prompts by singing along when your child faces difficulty in recalling the skip-counting numbers.

Here are some videos that can help with teaching the concept:

  1. Skip Counting by 2

  1. Skip Counting by 5

  1. Skip Counting by 10

  1. Skip Counting by 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language – “Point the number 2”, “Show me 5 with your hands”

  • Expressive language – Have your child to identify labels correctly e.g. point to the hot dog and ask “what’s this?”, point to the green box and ask  “what color is this?”, point to the boy and ask “Is this a boy?”
