What is it

Dice and board games to develop number skills in a functional way 


Teaching Objectives

  • To practice identify numbers and quantitative skills

  • To develop counting skills via 1 to 1 correspondence

  • To learn to play board games



How to use

1) Make your own dice by cutting the template out and pasting the edges

  • Choose your dice- numerals or dots

  • If child is new to counting, use dice with numerals to work on identification of numbers

  • If child is able to count, use dice with dots


2) Roll and do

  • Roll the dice and identify the number

  • Do the action according to the corresponding number

  • Create your own game by filling in the template with new actions!


3) Board games

  • Fun way to practice counting!

  • Practice rolling the dice and moving counters via 1 to 1 correspondence


4) Create your own board game!

  • Get a paper, draw boxes or circles up to your preference (20, 30, 50 or 100)

  • Write numbers 1, 2, 3,... in sequence til all boxes or circles are filled up

  • Decorate your board game by drawing, colouring, pasting stickers/ pictures, etc

  • Prepare counters and dice

  • Get a friend

  • Play!



Embed more learning opportunities

  • Turn taking: social skill of alternating between speaking and listening in conversations or sharing objects/activities in play

  • Waiting: patience, self-control, and emotional regulation, to manage impulses while waiting for turns, items, or activities

  • Understanding concept of winning vs losing: to develop essential life skills, such as building resilience, reinforces effort and skills, develop empathy and good sportsmanship, etc
