What is it
Activity booklet which facilitates reading of simple sentences and sight words as well as colouring, cutting and pasting of items associated with Christmas

Teaching Objectives
To practice reading simple sentences via repeated sentence structure
To be exposed to different sight words associated to Christmas
To learn and spell the various colours
To work on the child’s fine motor skills in cutting and pasting
To develop leisure skills like colouring as well as to improve overall attention for table tasks

How to use
Working together with your child to make the pages into a reading booklet
Parents can choose either to colour the pictures or to practice cutting out the sample and pasting it onto the booklet
Once ready, parents can read through the sentences to model for your child and for your child to read the next few pages themselves
Subsequently, parents can cover the sentences and challenge your child to describe the picture by remembering the sentence structure
As the child shows better fluency, parents can also demonstrate a different sentence structure to expand on the child’s literacy skills

Teaching tips
In order to promote child’s participation and to have greater involvement in this activity
Parents can allow greater flexibility by getting your child to choose whether they want to colour or cut out the pictures.
Encouraging the child to personalize their booklets by adding more decorations (e.g. stickers, stamps or doodling) on the empty pages of the booklet .
For the colouring component
If the child is unsure of the colours, parents can help the child identify the colours based on the coloured words in each page.
Parents can also choose to show the sample on pg 11 and 12 to help the child visualize the image.
Additionally, parents can also challenge your child to do more by colouring in the extra details of each picture as well!
For the cutting component
Start off with the simpler straight lines to work on the child’s control of the scissors.
As the child gains confidence and improved dexterity, they can move on to the harder curved lines sample.
If the child is having difficulty following the lines, parents can help thicken the lines by lining them with markers. The thicker line would serve as a prompt for the child to stay on the line.

Embed more learning opportunities
Spelling - cover the words and get the child to recall and spell out the word
General knowledge exposure - getting the child to describe the pictures and their features/uses
